About Project
Who Was the Client?
Storylane is a SaaS platform that helps marketing, sales, and go-to-market teams create, personalize, and share interactive product demos.
The platform allows companies to capture product experiences, turn them into guided or self-service demos, and track how prospects engage with them.
Storylane approached Synterra to extend its recording capabilities beyond the browser. Synterra designed and developed both the desktop applications for Windows and macOS and the Figma plugin, working closely with Storylane's product and engineering teams.
What Was the Client's Request for Collaboration?
Storylane already allowed users to capture web-based product experiences through a browser extension. However, browser restrictions prevented users from recording native desktop applications, system windows, pop-ups, context menus, and workflows spanning multiple applications.
The client asked Synterra to design and develop two new products: cross-platform desktop applications for Windows and macOS, and a Figma plugin integrated with the Storylane platform.
Main Goals
- Record native applications and complete desktop workflows
- Capture full screens, individual windows, pop-ups, and system-level interactions
- Track clicks accurately across applications and operating systems
- Integrate desktop captures into Storylane's existing editor
- Design and develop a Figma plugin for turning designs into interactive demos
What Was the Client's Bigger Business Goal?
Storylane's broader goal was to become a complete demo creation platform rather than a tool limited to browser-based products.
The business goals were to:
- Remove browser limitations from demo creation
- Let users capture product experiences across browser, desktop, mobile, and Figma
- Support more software companies and product use cases
- Keep every capture workflow connected to the existing Storylane editor
- Provide one consistent experience across all supported platforms
At What Stage Was the Client's Project?
Storylane already had a browser-based platform for creating interactive demos.
What was missing:
- Windows and macOS desktop recording
- Native application capture
- Full-screen and multi-window recording
- Mobile screen capture
- Figma integration
The existing browser extension could not capture complete workflows outside the browser.
What Was the Expected Outcome?
- Desktop applications for Windows and macOS designed and developed by Synterra
- Native app, full-screen, and window capture
- Accurate click tracking
- Multi-application recording
- Mobile screen mirroring
- A Figma plugin for turning designs into demos
- Seamless integration with Storylane's existing editor
How Was the Result Measured?
The solution was validated through:
- Cross-platform testing on Windows and macOS
- Capture and click-tracking accuracy
- Recording stability and performance
- Successful integration with Storylane's editor
- Client review and production acceptance
Internal adoption and revenue metrics were not available to our team.
How Did the Collaboration Work?
Synterra designed and developed the desktop applications and Figma plugin in direct collaboration with Storylane's product and engineering teams.
The process was iterative:
- 53. Define the capture use case
- 54. Review technical constraints
- 55. Build and test the solution
- 56. Integrate client feedback
- 57. Release and improve
The partnership continued across desktop recording, Figma, mobile capture, and ongoing platform updates.
Challenges
Browser Limitations
Browser extensions could not capture native apps, system windows, or multi-application workflows.
Solution: Built dedicated Electron applications for Windows and macOS.
Native Interaction Tracking
Desktop clicks happen across different applications and operating system APIs.
Solution: Added native Swift and C++ components for reliable interaction tracking.
Cross-Platform Differences
Windows and macOS handle permissions, capture, and distribution differently.
Solution: Shared the Electron and React foundation while isolating platform-specific logic.
Recording Performance
Full-screen recording can consume significant CPU and memory.
Solution: Optimized capture, event processing, and communication between Electron and native components.
Achievements
How Did We Add Value Beyond Delivery?
We helped shape the product direction, not only implement features.
Our team researched platform limitations, evaluated technical approaches, and proposed practical solutions for desktop, mobile, and Figma capture.
We also handled complex areas such as native interaction tracking, permissions, application signing, notarization, and release stability.
What Was the Result?
Before:
- Capture was limited mainly to browser workflows
- Native desktop apps could not be recorded
- No direct Figma or mobile capture workflow
After:
- Desktop applications for Windows and macOS
- Native app, full-screen, and multi-window capture
- System-level click tracking
- Mobile screen mirroring
- Figma plugin designed and developed by Synterra for creating demos from product designs
- Direct integration with Storylane's existing editor
